Description

Ultimaker Cura (often just called Cura) is a free, open-source 3D printing software developed by UltiMaker. It’s the world’s most widely used slicer, converting 3D models (like those made in Tinkercad or Fusion 360) into printable instructions for a 3D printer.

Ultimaker Cura is commonly introduced in Grades 7–12 and post-secondary STEM, design, or engineering programs. Students learn how digital models become physical objects, exploring design iteration, material science, and additive manufacturing as part of 3D printing or maker-space projects.

Features

  • Slicing Engine: Translates 3D designs (STL, OBJ, 3MF) into G-code files that tell the printer exactly how to build the model, layer by layer.
  • Custom Print Settings: Fine-tune print speed, temperature, infill density, supports, and layer height for different materials and outcomes.
  • Material Profiles: Preloaded settings for many filament types (PLA, ABS, PETG, etc.) and printer brands, including UltiMaker and others.
  • Preview Mode: Simulate each layer of the print to catch errors before printing.
  • Integrations: Connects with CAD tools like Tinkercad, Fusion 360, and SolidWorks for direct workflow export.
  • Plugin Marketplace: Extend features with community-made plugins for advanced analysis or printer management.
  • Cloud & Network Printing: Supports remote and multi-printer setups via UltiMaker Digital Factory.
