A rope is a powerful symbol for literacy learning. Each strand represents a different skill or process —oral language, reading, writing, and all their sub-skills. On their own, these strands have strength, but when woven together they become far more durable and resilient. In the same way, students develop into confident, capable communicators when these skills are intentionally taught in connection with one another. Just as a rope’s true strength comes from the braid, deep literacy grows from the integration of all its parts.
